The ongoing opioid epidemic in the United States (US) is entering a new phase with the Covid-19 pandemic. Overdose deaths are increasing in the US and opioid use disorder (OUD) is one of the main contributors to this issue. Naloxone is a life saving medication for opioid reversal but requires timely administration. Unfortunately, due to cost and other limitations such as prescription status, naloxone is not always available when it is needed most. Emergency Departments (ED) and hospitals can play a vital role in establishing naloxone distribution services and put this life-saving medications directly into the hands of patients that may need it.
