COVID-19: The Pharmacist’s Role in Resource Utilization Oversight

Healthcare clinicians and leaders are forced to make challenging decisions related to prioritizing medication use during times of limited access, requiring careful consideration to ensure patients with the greatest need receive medications while responsibly rationing supply. Lately, however, hospitals and health systems are being called upon to determine criteria for use for medications used to treat SARSCoV-2 infection (COVID) and medications for supportive care. ASHP Launches COVID Care Certified Product

COVID-Care Certified is the latest addition to ASHP’s COVID-19 resources designed to support those on the front lines of patient care.  Melanie Smith, Director of the Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners bring us the highlights for this 15 hour “COVID Care Certified” course that helps prepare pharmacists and pharmacy technicians for managing clinical and operational challenges during this pandemic.

The Emergency Department (ED) is an important resource and front liner to individuals seeking treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). Emerging evidence about initiating buprenorphine in the ED suggests that it may help OUD patients transition to treatment programs. Also, there is an ongoing discussion about the best approach to MAT in the ED setting.

This podcast will discuss buprenorphine use for opioid use disorder in the ED, including drug indication, dosing, and contraindications.
